What Is A Mood Disorder?

A mood disorder is a mental health condition that primarily affects your emotional state, causing persistent disturbances in your mood that significantly interfere with your ability to function in daily life.

According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), mood disorders are characterized by severe changes in mood that cause distress and impair your social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.

Unlike normal emotional fluctuations that everyone experiences, mood disorders involve intense, prolonged changes in mood that persist over time and represent a significant departure from your usual emotional state.

These conditions affect not only how you feel emotionally but also impact your thoughts, behaviors, energy levels, and physical health. The DSM-5 classifies mood disorders into several distinct categories based on the specific pattern and duration of mood symptoms you experience.

Types of Mood Disorders

The DSM-5 organizes mood disorders into several main categories, each with specific diagnostic criteria and characteristics:

  • Depressive Disorders represent conditions characterized primarily by persistent sad, empty, or irritable mood accompanied by physical and cognitive changes that significantly affect your functioning.
    • Major Depressive Disorder involves one or more major depressive episodes lasting at least two weeks with symptoms like persistent sadness, loss of interest, changes in appetite or sleep, and feelings of worthlessness.
    • Persistent Depressive Disorder (formerly dysthymia) involves chronic depression lasting at least two years with less severe but persistent symptoms that affect your quality of life.
  • Bipolar and Related Disorders are characterized by episodes of mania or hypomania alternating with periods of depression.
    • Bipolar I Disorder involves at least one manic episode that may be preceded or followed by hypomanic or major depressive episodes.
    • Bipolar II Disorder is defined by a pattern of depressive episodes and hypomanic episodes, but never a full manic episode.
    • Cyclothymic Disorder involves numerous periods of hypomanic symptoms and depressive symptoms that don’t meet the full criteria for major depressive episodes.
  • Other Specified and Unspecified Mood Disorders include presentations that don’t fit the specific criteria for other mood disorders but still cause significant distress or impairment.
    • Substance/Medication-Induced Mood Disorder occurs when mood symptoms are a direct result of substance use or medication effects.
    • Mood Disorder Due to Another Medical Condition involves mood disturbances that are the direct physiological consequence of a medical condition.

What To Expect During Treatment For Mood Disorders

When you begin treatment for mood disorders, you’ll start with a comprehensive assessment where our clinical team will work closely with you to understand your unique symptoms, medical history, and personal goals.

We’ll develop an individualized treatment plan that addresses not just your mood disorder, but your whole person – mind, body, and spirit.

You can expect a structured yet flexible daily routine that includes individual therapy sessions, group therapy, psychiatric consultations, and various holistic activities designed to support your healing.

Throughout your stay, our team will regularly check in with you to monitor your progress and adjust your treatment plan as needed. We believe in transparency and collaboration, so you’ll always be informed about your treatment and actively involved in decisions about your care.

How Do I Know I Need Treatment for Mood Disorders?

Recognizing when you need professional help can be challenging, but there are several signs that indicate it may be time to seek treatment.

  • If you’re experiencing persistent sadness, anxiety, or mood swings that last for weeks or months, this could signal a mood disorder requiring professional attention.
  • You might notice that you’re losing interest in activities you once enjoyed, struggling to maintain relationships, or finding it difficult to concentrate at work or school.
  • Physical symptoms often accompany mood disorders, including changes in your sleep patterns, appetite, or energy levels.
  • If you’re having thoughts of self-harm or suicide, it’s crucial to seek immediate professional help.
  • Additionally, if friends, family members, or colleagues have expressed concern about changes in your behavior or mood, this outside perspective can be valuable in recognizing the need for treatment.

Mood Disorder Treatment Programs in Georgia

At Kingston Wellness Retreat, we understand that effective treatment for mood disorders requires different levels of care depending on the severity of your symptoms and your individual needs.

Located in the beautiful rolling hills of Georgia, we offer comprehensive residential mental health treatment options and work collaboratively with other treatment providers to ensure you receive the right level of care at the right time.

Our goal is to provide you with seamless access to evidence-based treatment that supports your recovery journey from initial stabilization through long-term wellness.

Residential Treatment

Kingston Wellness Retreat provides the highest level of care for individuals experiencing severe mood disorder symptoms or those who need intensive support to achieve stability.

Our residential program offers 24-hour medical supervision and support in our luxury private estate setting, allowing you to focus entirely on your recovery without the distractions and stressors of daily life.

You’ll receive comprehensive care including individual therapy, group therapy, psychiatric medication management, and holistic therapies, all while staying in our peaceful, therapeutic environment.

This level of care is ideal if you’re experiencing severe depression, manic episodes, suicidal thoughts, or if outpatient treatment hasn’t provided adequate symptom relief.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

Through our partnerships with established treatment programs in Georgia, we can connect you with Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) that provide structured, comprehensive care typically involving 6-8 hours of treatment per day, 5-7 days per week.

These programs include individual and group therapy, psychiatric services, medication management, and psychoeducational groups focused on mood disorder management.

PHP is an excellent option if you need intensive support but can safely return home each day, or as a step-down from residential treatment as you transition back to your daily routine.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

We partner with quality Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) throughout Georgia that typically involve 9-12 hours of treatment per week, usually scheduled in the evenings or on weekends to accommodate your schedule.

These programs focus on developing coping skills, relapse prevention, medication adherence, and building support systems while allowing you to practice new skills in your daily environment.

IOP is ideal if you’re stable enough to live at home but need more support than traditional weekly therapy can provide.

How Is A Mood Disorder Treated in Georgia?

Treatment for mood disorders is most effective when it combines multiple approaches tailored to your individual needs.

Psychiatric Care

Psychiatry forms the foundation of our treatment approach, with our board-certified psychiatrists conducting thorough evaluations and providing ongoing medication management to help stabilize your mood and reduce symptoms.

Medication

Medication can play a crucial role in treatment for mood disorders and our psychiatrists work closely with you to find the right medication or combination of medications that provide relief while minimizing side effects. We carefully monitor your response and make adjustments as needed throughout your treatment.

We utilize GeneSight Testing to help determine what medications are most appropriate for your genetic makeup.

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is equally important in addressing the psychological aspects of mood disorders. We offer various evidence-based therapeutic approaches, including cognitive-behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and interpersonal therapy. These sessions help you develop coping skills, identify triggers, and work through underlying issues contributing to your mood disorder.

Holistic Therapy

Holistic mental health therapy complement traditional treatments by addressing your overall well-being. Our holistic offerings include yoga, meditation, art therapy, equine therapy, and nutritional counseling. These approaches help you reconnect with yourself, reduce stress, and develop healthy lifestyle habits that support long-term recovery.
